Walter John Jura, 92, beloved brother, uncle and friend, passed away Saturday, March 8, 2014, in Concordia Hospice, Cabot. He was born May 30, 1921, in Mammoth, to Michael and Mary (Szaflarski) Jura. He was about 3 years old when the family moved to West Deer Township, where he remained for the rest of his life. Mr. Jura first assisted with, and later operated, the Jura family farm, which specialized in raising purebred cattle. Additionally, he was well-known throughout the West Deer Township community as the owner of the Flat-Top Restaurant, and he was a much-beloved bus driver for the West Deer/Deer Lakes School System, a position he held for 28 years. Mr. Jura was fascinated by mechanics, electronics, carpentry, technology and astronomy. He dabbled in songwriting, playing the guitar and violin, and he loved listening to fiddle, old-time and country music. He delighted family and friends with his quick wit and gentle humor that, on rare occasions, found its way into short personal poems he penned just for them. A deeply spiritual man, he was devoted to his church and to the Catholic faith. He contributed to many charitable causes, including those of native and indigenous peoples. Finally, Mr. Jura had an enduring love and passion for the game of golf. Not only was he an avid follower of the PGA, but as often as possible, he could be found on a local course surrounded by his many friends. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his sisters, Alice Bazyk and Anna Yanko; and his brothers, John and Frank. He is survived by many devoted friends, as well as by his loving family, including his brother, Stanley (Doris) Jura; sister, Mary Tutak; nephew, David Jura; and nieces, Jodie Shaffer and Joan Tutak. Friends and relatives are invited to attend visitation from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday and 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the ADAM SIEMIANOWSKI FUNERAL HOME, 179 Starr Road, Russellton. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday in Transfiguration Roman Catholic Church, Russellton, with the Rev. James P. Holland as celebrant. Walter will be laid to rest next to his parents in Deer Creek Cemetery, Harmar Township
