Obituary

Dolores C. D'Amico Pierre died peacefully on Wednesday, December 9, 2015, at age 85, in the care of Good Samaritan Hospice at Concordia Rebecca Residence in Gibsonia, PA. Born to the late Samuel and Estelle Valentine D'Amico on July 3, 1930, in the Little Italy, Curtisville, section of West Deer Township, she was a 1948 graduate of West Deer High School. After initially meeting him as he boarded a ship to deploy for his Naval service, Dolores married Frank J. Pierre, Jr., on July 23, 1949. Together they celebrated over 66 years of marriage.

A lifelong student of both academics and life with a deep love of literature, Dolores committed her professional life to education. Beginning as a teacher's aide, she later became a 36-year-old freshman and earned an undergraduate and two Masters degrees from Duquesne University in Special Education, English, and Psychology. Specializing in the education of physically, intellectually, and behaviorally challenged students, Dolores taught for 25 years in the Churchill and Woodland Hills school districts. She was also elected to multiple terms on the Deer Lakes School Board, including a tenure as President.

Dolores was deeply committed to her community, devoting time to the Allegheny Valley Jr. Women's Club, the Cub Scouts, the U.S. Census Bureau, and work as a Judge of Elections. She taught CCD instruction at Transfiguration Roman Catholic Church, where she was a lifelong member.

With a deep and abiding love of family and friends, Dolores was known for her legendary sense of hospitality and her welcoming nature to everyone she encountered. She humbly displayed a generosity of spirit that she never failed to extend to those closest to her, and to new acquaintances, as evidenced by her legendary annual family reunions. Her family and friends will forever remember her endless font of compassion and acceptance.

Surviving her are her devoted husband, Frank, her children Joseph F. (Kathleen) Pierre, Jacque E. Pierre, and Phillip S. (Nealey) Pierre. Her legacy includes her beloved grandchildren: Evann L. (Nestor) Tomycz, Jaclyn P. (Victor) Stukat-Gren, Daniel J. Pierre, David M. (Hannah) Pierre, Chloe (Sean) Matthews, Gabrielle Pierre, Phoebe L. Pierre, Thomas J. Pierre, James J. Pierre, Andrew J. Pierre, Samuel C. Pierre, and Sophia E. Pierre, her great-granddaughters Sage, Lida, and Nolan Tomycz, and many nieces and nephews. Surviving, also, are Dolores' sisters Nancy J. Petrosky of Levittown, PA, and Sandra (Robert) Ehrhorn, of Vallejo, CA, and her sister-in-law Joan Busin D'Amico. She was predeceased by her parents, and her brother John F. (Jack) D'Amico.
